Ashland Hiking Home

A unique ‘hike’ day for us today. In the interest of healing a couple of injured ankles in the group, we scheduled a flat, short walk on the Bearcreek Greenway from Ashland to Talent. It was led by Alison Laughlin and Sue Myers. Five of us met to park cars in Talent for later shuttle back to Greenway parking at Ashland, then proceeded in one car to meet the others for a full group of 16 hikers.

To ‘nurse’ her Achilles heel, Elisabeth sent 15 walkers off with Alison and Sue, then drove to Talent to await their arrival on foot. We welcomed Janet, our newest member of the Friday Moderate group. The highlight for the walkers was seeing and listening to many birds in this area of bare trees conducive to the flocks traveling through. A Peregrine Falcon paused for an extended display for all to enjoy.

All of us then visited the Talent Maker City (www.talentmakercity.org; makeit@talentmakercity.org). A young woman, Lucia, gave us a fascinating tour of the workshop areas: Woodshop, Ceramics, Tech shop, Fiber Arts, Screenprinting, and Mechanics. We learned the scope of services they provide for school children and adults of all ages, from classes to individual artists’ and would-be artists utilizing spaces and equipment for individual projects, Moreover, Talent Maker City, a nonprofit, has created many items to help build a stronger community, including having made many beds for families who lost homes in the Almeda fire. From there, we gathered at Gather across the street for coffee and appetizers. By noon, we shuttled back to Ashland parking lot on the Greenway.

Total mileage walked was 3.2miles with no elevation gain.
